Get this party started

It’s been more than 20 years since I first launched Miss Vicky’s Offhand Remarks, a blog about feminism, politics, and my neighbourhood. I loved writing, loved the friends I made and the connections throughout my community that it brought, whether it was local businesses, artists, activists, media. It even led to a couple of nifty adventures.

I stepped away from blogging after several years because a shift in jobs and the busy life as a parent of two young kids left me with very little energy to keep up the kind of posting and content creation schedule that I had maintained for so long.  I turned instead to the micro-blogging that Twitter and Facebook provided – and for quite some time I found both platforms a great place to make connections and build community.

When Twitter became X I knew my days there were numbered. However I have not found the same kind of community and engagement on other platforms, despite many friends and neighbours migrating as well.

I have also found that the times we find ourselves in demand more than short posts can provide. I need space to stretch out, to ponder, to process and to explore. I need to get back to writing, to see ideas manifest in words and paragraphs so I can make connections and pursue avenues of thought and conversation – even if that conversation is with myself.

Whether this will evolve info a vlog or podcast remains to be seen.  For now, it’s really going to be the offhand remarks of a Gen X feminist, parent, trade unionist, and New Democrat navigating her way through a world that is becoming increasingly precarious and sometimes downright scary.

There is a lot to think about, and to write about.  I guess we can get this party started.
